A News Bite – FDNY Hiring Ex-Felons
Yesterday the NY Post said, that FDNY hires ex-felons to promote diversity. Former FDNY Commissioner Howard Safir said, “Crime reduction has not been made a priority in this Presidents administration (Obama).”
New concerns about FDNY hiring practices after NY Post reveals an unprecedented 9 ex-felons are among the newest graduating class of probationary fire fighters, including one who did jail time for gun possession. Critics accuse the FDNY of loosening it’s hiring standards, in an effort to diversify its ranks following a 2014 biased law suit. While others say everyone deserves a second chance.
Former FDNY Commissioner Howard Safir said, “I think it’s a bad policy. I’m all for redemption. But the fact is, if somebody committed a felony, it’s a flaw in their character. The police and fire departments are some of the most honorable professions in the world. In my view, if you’ve committed a felony, you should certainly be last in line behind people who did not commit a felony. Lowering standards is the wrong message, especially in emergency services where lives are at stake.”
On the lighter side of a news bite, Chipotle, has been accused of lying about the amount of calories in their popular Chorizo Burrito. Critics say there are 300 calories in the Chorizo alone, that doesn’t include everything else.
