At 4:40 pm in Berlin, a behemoth truck plowed though a crowd of people gathered at a Christmas market. Through the NY Post: Isil have claimed responsibility.
Nine people have been pronounced dead and 50 others injured.
This horrific scene took place in Breitscheidplatz, a public square in western Berlin.
Police in Berlin said, “The suspect had been arrested near the scene. A passenger in the truck died at the scene. There are no other specifics relating to this crime at this time. The identity of the passenger and arrested suspect have not been released. Police spokesman Winfried Wenzel told ZDF television that the suspect arrested was believed to be the truck driver.
A Berlin resident Emilie Engbirk said the street where this terrible incident took place is one of the busiest; especially in lieu of the people gathered at a Christmas market.
“German media reported that the truck driver jumped the sidewalk around wooden stands at the market, which was set up around the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, whose jagged spire, a reminder of the bombings during World War II, is one of the most symbolic sites in Berlin. It sits between two main streets that run through the heart of West Berlin.”
“Local media reported that the driver fled the scene. Later, Berlin police said they had arrested a man near the Christmas market, but they were not immediately able to confirm whether he was the driver. The police also said a passenger was found dead in the cab of the truck.”
It could very well be that the dead passenger in the truck was the truck driver of the vehicle and the terrorist had hijacked the truck killing the driver and continuing with this egregious terrorist attack.
We are extending our condolences to the people and families of those killed or hurt in this terrible tragedy before the upcoming Christmas holiday.
