I’m not letting the powers that be limit my imagination and contribution of an interesting character added to the TV series House of Cards on Netflix. Frances Underwood’s mother coming for a short visit.
Building a character in a screenplay, movie, TV series, book, or play is the most important responsibility as a writer to their audience. To define and create their characters persona, identification, personality, virtues, vices, and temper.
We usually are attracted to someone who at the very least seems interesting and mysterious, and at the very most you’re not willing to walk away from them.
Then with a little ingenuity and flare you can take it further. Further than Frances Underwood’s realm of declarative statements and justifications for his secret behavior to climb to the very top. All his justifications to commit short of public murder.
After all he is the President and he couldn’t do this openly as the Romans, the Greeks, the mid-evil powers that openly committed public murder long ago. If the King accused you of treason you were hung and the public wouldn’t utter an opposing declaration or stance on your behalf without risking their own lives. Deterrence, encouraging to avoid the dangers of life when weighing the consequences. But for Frances and his mother Elizabeth deterrence doesn’t really upgrade your status in the public eye.
Frances Underwood’s mother must come to life. It’s the one thing he needs to show how kind heart he is and is not. How his mother can continue to add to his persona in public life and then just between he and his mother share all their secrets.
Elizabeth always had a mind of her own and that didn’t get in the way of her more than satisfactory marriage. She prided herself in supporting and adding to the family’s legacy. She said,
“At times your father came home with contentious peevish disliking for his job in office. It was my responsibility to put this all in perspective for him usually by listening and suggesting. We would sit out on the veranda sipping spiked tea. Then I would bring up something funny and he would go back to being himself. I do miss your father more than ever.” ~ said Natalie As Elizabeth Underwood
“I can assure you that we sacrificed a great deal to preserve our political dynasty in this family. It was a sagacious choice that we imposed our declaration for the common good. With that said, this was our families goal to help others through serving in office for the common good and of course our charities which became dear to me.” said Natalie as Elizabeth Underwood.
“Your father and I did experience the vicissitudes of our marriage. This only made for a stronger marriage. Your marriage to Clare my darling son has a wonderful rhythm you make me proud. I could have only wished more for you if you had had children. But even that precious thought isn’t to late Frances. Just a mere observation my darling son.” said Natalie as Elizabeth Underwood
“It is in sagacity an acute mental discernment that you come to realize all that is truly important in our lives are those you love. It’s the only thing that matters. Once you’ve crossed this threshold of maturity well than life becomes a bit more favorable in my experience.” said Natalie as Elizabeth Underwood
“If you spend your life dawdling and meandering as my sister’s husband did. Then you have less to accomplish and most importantly experience. I always loved a man who was driven. Anything less, I would have felt more uncomfortable with. That is why I married your father my dear son.” said Natalie as Elizabeth Underwood
“If our thoughts are not of good for the commonwealth of our people, then we are not working together and left with nugatory wasteful intentions.” said Natalie as Elizabeth Underwood
“I will continue to add to Elizabeth Underwood’s colorful persona. She is pure in her heart and dangerously ample in her mind.” ~ Natalie
